Electronic Eel Radio – Monthly Podcast - Details and some FAQ’s
A free monthly podcast featuring electronic artists from around the world. Launching on the 15th of every month, Eel Radio will be available from a number of podcast feeds, and podcast hosting sites. Users can subscribe directly from electroniceel.com, or from a number of podcast directories (currently about 60). For those of you unfamiliar with feeds, it means that users can subscribe, and will be notified by their browser when a new podcast is available. In some places, users can subscribe and have the podcast automatically download into their itunes.
Eel radio will be about an hour of music podcasted monthly. The genres will vary, but we are sticking to the format and mission of Electronic Eel Records. Any artist featured will be electronic music of an independent nature. Take from that what you will, and if it fits, we’re interested in your music. Artists can either send a CD with their submission to our mailing address, or you can email us an MP3 file to podcasts@electroniceel.com
We get a lot of people that send us links to their band pages on the web, but we really prefer you send us your tracks. It’s easier for us to manage, and we keep a database of stuff we get. Maybe your track doesn't fit one podcast, but would go great with another. Had you not sent us your track, we would not have had you available and ready to go.
Myspace.
There is a myspace page for the podcast. These songs will NOT be available for download from the myspace flash player on our page, but the podcast will. Users will not be able to take your individual track. If you are interested in being on the podcast, but do not want to be featured on our myspace page player, you need to opt out. We will be doing our best to promote the artists on our podcast, and myspace is a great way of doing this. We will also be keeping people posted when new podcasts are available, and we love adding friends who would likely be listeners.
What’s in it for the artists featured?
On the Eel radio page, there will be a list of all artists featured on the podcast. You will also get a link to your site, or myspace page, from www.electroniceel.com/eelradio. If you sell your music, you are more than welcome to make that link a site that people can buy or download your stuff.
If you appear on the podcast, you will be a part of our monthly newsletter that goes out to various magazines, radio stations, other podcasters, and people that review music for print and web, plus all of the fans and listeners that come to our podcast looking for artists similar to what is on the label, or similar to their taste judging from artists they are friends with on myspace. This list is always growing, and hopefully will contribute to your success. We will also be promoting the label heavily in 2007 in a variance of ways. We will be promoting this podcast as much as possible. This all leads back to the artists featured.
I have a free track, can I give it away on your site?
Yes. We have a download central page, where fans can download free tracks, and we'd love it if you had a download to post for free, which doesn't need to be the track on the podcast. If you are featured on a podcast, you can offer your track directly from our site. If you’re not on a label, it’s a good way to get free publicity, and new fans. When you no longer want to offer it for free download in our download section, just tell us, and we’ll remove it within 7 days.
Are you going to sell my music?
No. We had planned to do try something in this direction, but the decision not to do this has been made. EER looked into having a more impressive store on the site, but merchant services are too expensive for single song downloads, and it just isn’t worth the hassle. We can sell full album downloads for you, but then you would have to trust that we pay you your cut, since our site isn’t advanced enough for you to track your own sales. Because that isn’t a practical model, we don’t have the offer on the table at this time. If it is something you’re interested in, just contact us and we’ll discuss further.
If I’m on the podcast, does that mean I can get on the label?
Possibly. Its something we need to talk about individually. With the podcast we select by songs we like. Label releases are more about artists we like, and there is a much larger picture and production involved. There will be more artists on the label this year. Contact us for more info.
Do I get paid for being featured on the podcast?
No. The podcast is free. There is no money involved here. There are no performance royalties involved here either.
What about artist rights?
If you give permission for us to feature you on the podcast, you will be promoted through the podcast. Once on there, you cannot be removed, and the podcast will not be removed. We will not sell your song or distribute your song in any other fashion except for the free podcast it is embedded in. If you opt to offer a free track from our site, we can take it down, when you want it taken down, but again no money is involved here.
Also, you are liable for your own tracks. If your song contains samples, sound bytes or any other clips, you need to make sure you have the rights to use those clips, before sending the track to us. Even though we're not selling anything or violating any laws by putting it in the podcast, we'd rather not be involved if someone is upset over any samples you may have used. We will not be held liable, and all information is linked back to the artist. We will also not be hosting remixes, unless we receive documentation that you have the rights to the song.
Does my song need to be copyrighted?
Your song is already copyrighted. Whether or not it is registered with the Library of Congress for U.S. artists, is your choice, but it is recommended that you file the necessary paperwork before giving your song to anyone. If you ever needed to file a lawsuit over copyright infringement, you will need to be registered with the Library Of Congress.
Here is what we need from you:
1. Send your MP3 submission to Podcasts@electroniceel.com
2. Send a quick paragraph about who you are and where you are from. (feel free to send a photo (optional, but keep in mind that the music style we like to promote doesn’t sell particularly well because it lacks a human element, so photos are a good thing for you, and I will post them if you are getting an artist page on electroniceel.com)
3. List Song title, artist name, album name. We need the link that will go next to your track title on the cast page, so listeners can find out more information about you.
4. Do you want to offer your song for free download from our download central yes or no? If you do not answer yes, we will NOT allow it for free download.
5. If you want to make the podcast, I need your song by the 5th of the month.
